Mary Jane Oestmann
Mary Jane Oestmann, 82, ANS Fellow and member since 1960; received her bachelor's
degree in mathematics and chemistry from Denison University; received her master's degree
and doctorate from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1948 and 1954, respectively;
after graduation, conducted research involving medical applications of radioisotopes at
nuclear institutes in Norway and Sweden; upon returning to the United States, became a
visiting professor in chemistry at the University of Iowa; later worked as a senior scientist
conducting nuclear research at Battelle Memorial Institute; in 1961, became an associate
chemist for the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission at Argonne National Laboratory, where
she conducted research for the Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor Program; taught foreign
scientists at the International Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering under President
Eisenhower's "Atoms for Peace" program; in 1971, transferred to Washington, D.C., as the
first woman environmental project manager for licensing nuclear power plants; retired in 1987;
died June 17 of
pancreatic cancer.
